UK Regulatory Compliance

Testing Requirements

All handheld X-ray devices used in the UK must meet strict regulatory requirements. Digital Dental ensures every Rextar Pro installation is fully compliant and supported.

IRR17 Compliance

The Rextar Pro must be used in accordance with the Ionising Radiation Regulations 2017 (IRR17). A Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) must be consulted before use.

IRME Regulations

All exposures must comply with the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 (IRME). A referrer, practitioner, and operator must be identified for each exposure.

Local Rules

Written Local Rules must be in place before the device is used. These must be drafted with the guidance of an RPA and be available to all staff involved in radiation procedures.

Radiation Protection Supervisor

A Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) must be appointed to ensure Local Rules are observed and radiation safety procedures are followed at all times.

Critical Examination

A Critical Examination by a Medical Physics Expert (MPE) is required prior to clinical use. This ensures the device is installed and operating safely within its specification.

Routine Testing

Regular quality assurance testing must be carried out in line with IPEM Report 91 guidance. Digital Dental provides a full X-ray testing service to keep your practice compliant.

Controlled Area

A controlled area must be designated around the device during use. Signage must be displayed and access restricted to authorised personnel only during exposures.

CQC Registration

Practices in England must be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and demonstrate compliance with radiation regulations as part of their ongoing registration.

The Only Handheld X-ray Unit Fully Evaluated by the UKHSA

The Rextar Pro is the only handheld intraoral X-ray device to have undergone full independent evaluation by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). This evaluation confirms that when used correctly, the device meets all UK radiation safety standards — giving your practice the confidence it needs to operate compliantly.
